Why Preservatives Matter - and Why We Chose Geogard ECT

One of the least talked-about but most critical parts of skincare formulation is preservation. A product without a preservative system is an open invitation for bacteria, mold, and yeast. That’s not just a product fail, it’s a potential health risk.

The challenge is that many conventional preservatives are harsh or fail clean standards. Parabens, formaldehyde donors, and phenoxyethanol are effective but increasingly viewed as red flags by conscious consumers and clean retailers.

Salicylic acid: Often associated with acne treatments, but in our case it’s present only in tiny amounts as part of the preservative system.
Fragrance-free: Even though benzyl alcohol can be used in perfumes, our formula contains no fragrance at all.

When building our first formula, we went beyond just avoiding “bad” ingredients. We asked: what’s the cleanest, most effective way to achieve results?

Instead of EDTA (a chelating agent many retailers ban), we use sodium phytate, a plant-based alternative that stabilizes the formula without environmental concerns.
Instead of cheap mineral oils, we rely on squalane, argan oil, and jojoba oil - biomimetic emollients your skin recognizes and loves.
Instead of filler thickeners, we chose xanthan gum, a natural stabilizer that plays nicely with sensitive skin.

Our guiding principle: if an ingredient doesn’t directly benefit your skin or the formula’s stability, it doesn’t make the cut.
